BHM Media Event

April 4, 2023

The Black History Month Media event was hosted at NYHQ designed to brief media on BCC and provide insight into how we support athletes* on their wellness journeys to achieve well-being, leveraging Nike and partner voices while encouraging dialogue around the importance of self-care within the Black community.

The event consisted of a meditation and yoga session on the basketball court which then flowed upstairs for a panel with the BCC partners. The day concluded with a 15 minute healing circle and a lively discussion during lunch served by a local Black woman owned business.

As event coordinator and subject matter expert on the venue, I provided thoughtful and creative solutions to the client on how to emulate a wellness focused event through music, set up, lighting, and visuals. I made sure to offer fiscally responsible solutions without giving up on the client's vision. For example the client wanted to brighten and create an inviting space to encourage more personal conversations during lunch. Naturally, the office is designed with a concrete jungle environment in mind. We decided on tablecloths and florals, but knowing how expensive these rentals can be I redirected the host to do a one-time purchase on the tablecloths to decrease costs by 75%. I also encouraged the host to use a floral vendor that we currently have a strong relationship with and are awarded a partnership discount.

Since the event was to kickoff BHM and highlight Nike's commitment to the Black community, I sourced the yoga trainer and external catering from Black owned businesses to support the community and remain authentic to our mission. I also ensured smooth transitions between each piece of the event and interacting with the guests in an inviting manner.

Presentation and quick introduction from Nike's NYC GM. Featuring a sizzle reel from KD highlighting wellness in the Black community.
Yoga and meditation set up on the court. Provided yoga mat, two blocks, straps, and bottled water at each mat. Ensured the set up allowed for optimal viewing of the trainer for each participant. Lights were dimmed to encourage a more relaxing and welcoming environment.
Lunch set up to facilitate conversations. Set up included static image visuals, curated playlist, table cards, question cards, florals, and tablecloths. Used warmer lighting and white tablecloths and chairs to follow the client's vision of brightening the space. Also brought in florals to bring life back into the concrete structure of the space.
Panel set up included stage, accessible soft seating, static image visuals, microphones, and audience chairs. Ensured the seating on the stage was comfortable and accessible for all panelists.
